I guess the English and German definitions roughly mean the same thing. English is based on German with some french influence After all, Anglo-Saxons are German tribes.
I realized it is a quite similar meaning, but Spiel is not a verb in German, it is a neutral noun.
It is always confusing if I think in a different language but encounter native(loan) words in the foreign language. It is the point where I switch back to native language thinking.

I could write a bit about Tolkien and his arda(erde)/earth and middle earth.
In a nutshell, Tolkien tells history. Almost nobody knows the Silmarillion however. WWII is one aspect, but it goes back to Atlantis in his writings.
I don’t know how these obscure dictionaries come into being. My guess is it’s for facilitating yewspeak, so noone knows about the original meaning anymore. Sure, language is a living thing and meanings change. Not always for the better though.

I would by no means object to your definition of movie maker Spielberg being a massive
bullshitter. But Spielberg is quite obviously a German name and if you want to translate
it into English it could at best be translated as “game-mountain” or “game-hill”. Having said that I am
of course fully aware that when you say in English “what kind of a spiel is this or that
fellow trying to pull off” that this might colloquially run conform to your line of thought.
I should presume, though, that it would be primarily Yiddish speakers in Anglosaxon
environments, who would today use the word “spiel” in this way. Since Yiddish can be described as
“pidgeon German”, formerly used mainly by less wealthy Jews in the Slavic East of Europe, I should
concede at least that partial aspect to you.

I think in the early days rabbis were sons of rabbis and it was a generational thing, therefore, most rabbis had had names such as Kohen or Levi and the variations – hence a ‘rabbinical name’.
